Every rock band can remember playing early gigs for just a handful of people, but Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson says he once played a show for a literal audience of one.
Dickinson told the story on Chris Jericho’s Talk Is Jericho podcast. He said the gig happened when he was in college. His band played in an empty disco hall for $50, when one person walked in, grabbed a chair, and “put it right in the middle of the dance floor and sat down”.
Dickinson was so glad to have an audience, even if it was just one guy, that he offered to buy the man a beer.
